  1. Actresses Born in Italy

Rome is one of the oldest cities in the world and was home to the Roman Empire for hundreds of years. Rome is full of architecture renowned all over the world, including the Colosseum and Arch of Constantine.

Many of us have studied the Romans at school and may even have visited some Roman sites. We have heard the tales of Julius Caesar wearing a wreath on his head to hide his baldness.

But sometimes it seems little has come out of Rome in the last century.

Since the fall of the Empire, some of Rome’s most famous children have selected careers away from politics and conquering. There are several famous actresses who were born in Rome.

Sophia Loren was born in 1934 to Construction Engineer father Riccardo Scicolone and actress mother Romilda Villani. Loren had been offered an early role due to her close resemblance to Greta Garbo, but her mother had prevented her taking it up.

Sophia Loren’s mother had moved away from Rome to a life described as squalid. She blamed this on Scicolone’s reluctance to marry her. This early, difficult chapter in her life was perhaps the reason some described Sophia Loren as an “ugly” child.

Loren grew up through World War II and gained her famous facial scar from a narrow escape during a bombing raid. Finally, in 1950, at the age of 15, Sophia Loren blossomed into the beauty that adorned the silver screen for decades.

After winning a beauty competition, Loren and her mother made the journey to begin her film career. Just three years later she delivered the performance of her career in Aida. In 1961, she won an Oscar for Two Women. As an International movie icon Sophia Loren has put Rome firmly on the map of stars.

Another internationally renowned actress to be born in Rome is Isabella Rossellini. Most noted for her 1986 film Blue Velvet; Rossellini is also well known for her Conservation work. Isabella Rossellini was born in Rome in 1952. Her parents are international actress Ingrid Bergman and Italian Director Roberto Rossellini.

Rossellini moved to the United States when she was 19 to attend college. She quickly took on movie roles after appearing in one of her mother’s films. After enjoying three decades of movie roles and TV appearances, Isabella Rossellini is spending more time in her role with the Wildlife Conservation Network.
