May 27 - Opening Day |
The Scoop on Poop
Opens May 27, 2010 - Open Daily
Fish do it, frogs do it, pythons, eagles and elephants do it, yet poop is
one of those subjects we find difficult to talk about with a straight face.
Kids, however, are positively fascinated by it, and poop is interesting
stuff, really! Animals use poop to build homes, hide from enemies, attract
mates, send messages, and cool off - some even eat it. Veterinarians,
farmers, naturalists, paleontologists, Maasai tribesmen and power companies
use it too. And poop is a scientific puzzle. With a little detective work,
you can learn a lot about an animal by what it leaves behind.
The Scoop on Poop is a traveling exhibition based on the popular book by
science writer Dr. Wayne Lynch. It leads visitors on an investigation of
what poop is and how both animals, people, and even power companies, use it.
Visitors can listen in on an bear's digestive system, learn the language of
poop in countries around the world, examine fecal samples in a
veterinarian's lab, compete in dung beetle races, track wild animals by
clues left in scat, see how long it takes an elephant to poop their body
weight, improve their #2 IQ in stool school, and meet a dinosaur dung
detective.
The Scoop on Poop was created by the exhibits department of Clyde Peeling's
Reptiland in Allenwood, Pennsylvania, a zoological institution accredited by
the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. It is the largest exhibition ever
mounted about the science of scat.

The holiday tradition continues at Hale Farm & Village with the annual
Lantern Tours. This 90-minute, lantern-lit journey is the best way to see,
hear and smell the holidays as experienced in the 19th-century. Visitors
embark on an evening stroll through the village where it is Christmas Eve,
1864. Here they enter the homes clustered around the village green to gain
insight into holiday celebrations from a variety of village residents,
drawing on their varying heritage and family traditions to celebrate the
Christmas holiday despite the country’s Civil War plight.
Lantern Tours depart every 20 minutes beginning at
6:00 pm (last tour at 8:20pm). Every effort is made to present the Lantern
Tours as described; however, the tours are subject to change without prior
notice. Lantern Tours are an indoor/outdoor activity. Guests are asked to
dress for the weather. Reservations are required. For ticket availability
and reservations call 330-666-3711. Admission is: $15 for WRHS Members, $18
for non-members. Group rates are available for 15 or more people.
